Christianity Is Being Overwritten, and Notre Dame Is Just the Start

Notre Dame: who cares?

You do. But who else?

Europe’s Islamists. They’re celebrating the ignominious destruction of the second greatest Western church in the world. They didn’t even have to blow this one up… despite almost succeeding in doing so just a few years ago.

To them, the Notre Dame fire is proof that Christianity is already a museum relic, one the curators can’t even be counted on to keep it safe. Much less alive.

Who else cares about the fire?

The Chinese. They just plowed flat a mosque, in their far western Uighur territory, that was as old as Notre Dame and in continuous use. The Chinese now know that the West is too busy struggling to survive to stop them in their all our campaign to destroy all the outside religious influence they can.

Who else?

The West’s secular social justice warriors. Some of them are sentimental enough to weep at anyone’s painful loss. But they’re an aging and shrinking minority. Most think it’d be great if the Catholic Church burned down, or at least shut down.

Then there’s the Russians. Moscow still thinks of itself as the Third Rome, the true heir and leader of Christendom and the West. While the great Catholic and Protestant churches are mouldering, Putin and company are building shiny new Orthodox cathedrals left and right. One of them is right there in Paris, just a few miles from Notre Dame…

It should all give the West’s secular elites a heart attack. For Christians, the Notre Dame fire is a wakeup call. A reminder of the burning truth about witness and sacrifice. For secularists, however, their feeble institutions and buildings are the next dominos to fall in a West that loses its Christian spirit.

If Notre Dame is weak, what does that say about the United Nations building? EU headquarters in Brussels? The British Parliament?

What does that say about NATO? About the West’s precarious financial system?

The global institutions of the West don’t have any real moral or spiritual backing behind them. The idea behind them was that we need to get rid of public faith in order to achieve justice and stability.

Now the weakness of Christianity shows that the secular West is even weaker.

And the resilience of Christianity in the face of the Notre Dame fire shows that the secular West lacks the core and the character to bounce back from its own decadence… its own vulnerability to sudden, shocking collapse.
